Anti-CAA Protests Highlights: Hundreds of students staged protest against the police action against their companions a day earlier, outside Jamia Millia Islamia University on Monday. Carrying a tricolour, students clapped and raised slogans against the central government and the Delhi Police.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a series of tweets has said while dissent is an essential part of democracy, violence is not. He was articulating government's stand on the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act.
Meanwhile, Congress and several opposition political parties on Monday condemned the police "brutality" against students of the University and demanded a judicial inquiry into the incidents.

The online letter, signed and endorsed by as many as 1,053 students and teachers, says: As citizens and members of the academic community, we write to register our protest at the recent enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019.
This letter marks another strong protest against the CAA as has been seen across the universities in the country.
Raising slogans against 'autocratic' Narendra Modi government, 'unconstitutional' Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and proposed nation-wide National Register of Citizens (NRC), students marched from the campus to Gachibowli Stadium.
MHA sources said applicants will need to apply for citizenship with required documents through the prescribed channel.
They said applicants will not get citizenship automatically.
The IIT-B students, including many girls, carried torches, banners and posters saying 'In Solidarity With Jamia' and silently marched around their campuses peacefully, late on Sunday.
Delhi University Students' Union President Akshit Dahiya on Monday claimed that some student groups forcibly prevented students from appearing in examinations.
In a statement issued by Dahiya, he also alleged that when he reached the spot to help students enter the examination hall, the student groups attacked him.
Exams for undergraduate and postgraduate courses are currently underway in Delhi University.
Prominent names from the film fraternity, including director Anurag Kashyap, Taapsee Pannu, Konkona Sensharma and Sudhir Mishra on Monday condemned the police crackdown on students of Jamia Milia while accusing the government of trying to stifle the voices of dissent against Citizenship Amendment Act.

Jamia Millia Islamia University Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar demanded a high-level probe into the police action on the students protesting peacefully inside their campus. She strongly condemned the ‘forceful’ entry of police personnel inside the campus despite denying them permission.
‘There has been a lot of property damage in the University,how will all this be compensated? There has been an emotional loss as well. Yesterday's incident was unfortunate. I also appeal to everyone to not believe in any kind of rumours,’ she stated.

This (Police burnt buses) is an absolute lie. When mob was setting fire to properties, police tried to douse the fire by asking for water from residents. As far as the particular bus is concerned, Police saved it by using water from a bottle, he said.

All schools in south east Delhi will remain shut on Monday, Delhi deputy chief minister and education minister Manish Sisoda announced here on Sunday night.

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Registrar Abdul Hamid said the police entered the campus late Sunday night and clashes were reported from inside. Hostels are being evacuated, he said.

In the wake of violence in southeast Delhi after a protest against the amended Citizenship Act, the Delhi Metro Rail corporation (DMRC) closed the gates of around 13 metro stations on Sunday evening, following advice from police.
Security Update Entry & exit gates at all stations have been opened. Normal services have resumed in all stations, the DMRC said in a tweet on Monday.
Earlier on Sunday night, the Delhi Minority Commission (DMC) issued a direction to the SHO of Kalkaji Police Station to release the injured Jamia students held there or take them for treatment at a reputed hospital without any delay.
The commission also directed the officer to file a compliance report by 3 pm on Monday.
In the order, DMC Chairman Zafarul Islam Khan said failure to implement it will attract appropriate action.
Hundreds of students who were protesting against the police action on the violence in Jamia Millia Islamia university dispersed after staging six hours of sit-in in front of the Delhi Police headquarters in the early hours of Monday, demanding release of the detained students.
As many as 50 students, who were detained during protests at the Jamia Millia Islamia University here on Sunday, were released in the early hours of Monday, police said.
Of the 50 students, 35 were released from the Kalkaji police station and 15 from the New Friends Colony police station, a senior police officer said.
Police had clamped down on the protesters after incidents of arson and stone-pelting was reported in the campus.
