Anti-CAA Protests HIGHLIGHTS: Protests have intensified in various parts of the country after the Parliament passed the Citizenship Amendment Act last week. Massive protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) were reported from across the country where protesters clashed with police on Friday. While the situation across Uttar Pradesh remained tense in the wake of violence, in Bihar, the RJD workers and supporters on Saturday have called of "Bihar-Bandh" against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
Earlier on early hours on Saturday morning, Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad was taken into police custody from outside the Jama Masjid. He was inside the mosque in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
The CAA grants citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists and Christians fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh and came to India on or before December 31, 2014.

Daryaganj violence: 15 accused sent to 2 day judicial custody
A court here on Saturday sent all 15 accused in the Daryaganj violence case, during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Actm, to two days judicial custody.
Metropolitan Magistrate Arjinder Kaur also directed counsel for the accused persons to approach the registry for filing the bail pleas, which would be heard on Monday.
The defence lawyer told the court that police has arrested a juvenile, aged 15, and presented him before the court today. The police however said that the accused had told the police that he was 23 years old.
A scuffle broke out between the police and students of various varsities mainly Jadavpur University on Central Avenue outside the BJP headquarters in Kolkata when the students were agitating against Citizenship Amendment Act.
11 injured in Bihar violence
It is being reported that 11 people have been injured in violence during Bihar bandh against Citizenship Amendment Act and National Register of Citizenship.
Members of the VIP and other parties reached at Rajendra Nagar Terminal in Patna and blocked railway tracks. The protesters also jammed the National Highway-2 in Aurangabad that lead to snarls of vehicles.
Besides, protesters took to streets in Patna, Araria, Aara, Bhagalpur, Samastipur, Vaishali etc. and did arson along with anti-government sloganeering. Similar incidents were also reported from various parts of the state.

Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Aazad sent to 14 days' judicial custody
A Delhi court on Saturday sent Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Aazad, who was arrested in connection with the violence in Old Delhi's Daryaganj area, to 14 day's judicial custody.
Aazad, who was arrested earlier in the day, sought bail from the court on the ground that there is no evidence that he instigated the Jama Masjid crowd to go to Delhi Gate where the protesters had turned violent.
The court dismissed his bail plea and sent him to 14 days' judicial custody.
A Delhi court has sent all accused in Friday's Seelampur violence case to 14 days judicial custody with right to move bail immediately.

At least 11 people, including an 8-year-old boy, have lost their lives in Uttar Pradesh as the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act turned violent in the state, officials said on Saturday.
After Friday prayers, protesters clashed with police at several places in the state and hurled stones and torched vehicles.
On Friday, four deaths were reported from Meerut district and two each in Kanpur and Bijnor. An 8-year-old boy was killed in a stampede in Varanasi when a violent mob was being chased by policemen. Besides, violence claimed a life each in Sambhal and Firozabad.

Amid the raging protests across the country, including scores of violent incidents, against the Citizenship Amendment Act, the Union Home Ministry on Friday released the five clauses under the Citizenship Act to acquire Indian citizenship. According to the Citizenship Act, 1955, under the first clause, citizenship by birth under Article 5 of the Constitution provides that any person who was domiciled in India on January 26, 1950 or who was born in the territory of India is a citizen of India, the notification said.
In Darbhanga, party supporters also protested at the railway line and disrupted train movement.

New Delhi: Hours after a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act on Friday turned violent with pelting of stones at police and torching of a car in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central, near the Delhi Gate, protesters gathered at the Delhi Police HQ at ITO and shouted slogans.
According to Delhi Police, around 300 protesters gathered outside the police headquarters located at Income Tax Office (ITO) area and raised slogans against the BJP-led Central government over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the National Register of Citizens.
Following the surprise protest held at night outside the police headquarters, Delhi Police rushed extra force to control the situation there.
The police also diverted traffic going towards Laxmi Nagar from ITO as a precautionary measure.
Police, meanwhile, said they had detained 40 persons earlier in the day over the violence at Delhi Gate in which 12 policemen received injuries.
The stone-pelting in the evening began after the protesters, who intended to march from Jama Masjid to Jantar Mantar, were stopped by the barricades set up by the police some distance from Delhi Gate.
The crowd raised slogans against the government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and began pulling away the barricades in an attempt to move ahead.
The police then used water cannons on the crowd, and also used a water jet in a bid to douse the car set on fire.
According to Delhi Police sources, protesters from Seelampur and Jafrabad area in east Delhi - where violence occurred earlier this week - joined in the protest and indulged in violence. First, they pelted stones at the police as well as the media gathered to cover the protest, and then they torched the parked car.
The protesters also damaged a number of other vehicles outside the DCP's office before DCP M.S. Randhawa led the force to chase away the protesters.
The protesters leading a march against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) paused briefly at Masjid Nabi Baksh at Delhi Gate to offer evening prayers. A group of elderly and young people formed a human chain at the barricades to stop people from indulging in any untoward incident.
According to Delhi Police officers, a large posse of security forces was deployed at Delhi Gate, near the Bahadur Zafar Shah Marg, and barricades were set up at Daryaganj Chowk, around a kilometre away towards the Jama Masjid.
Police had also deployed the anti-riot Vajra vehicle and water cannons to disperse the crowd.
A few thousand people had gathered at Jama Masjid earlier in the day to express resentment over the Act, and demanded its immediate roll back.
